A 15-0 lead inside twenty minutes, four Auburn tries in reply, and debut scores for Joe Pankhurst and Lorenzo Tamayo.
The Gators men opened the 2026-27 season on Friday evening in Auburn and came up two points short, 24-22, after building a 15-0 lead inside the first twenty minutes.
First Half
Florida started fast. Joe Pankhurst put the first points on the board with a penalty at 5 minutes. Lorenzo Tamayo crossed at 11. At 20 minutes Matthew Boylan went over and Pankhurst added the conversion, and Florida led 15-0 with a quarter of the match gone.
That was as good as it got. A couple of mistakes midway through the half handed Auburn a way back in. They scored at 27 minutes and again at 32, the momentum shifted completely, and Florida never recovered the initiative.
Second Half
Auburn carried that momentum through the restart, adding tries at 44 and 54 minutes to lead 24-15.
Florida kept working at it. Stavros Pantelis went over at 78 minutes and Pankhurst converted to bring the margin back to two, but there was not enough left on the clock to finish the job.
The Read on It
This was Florida's first outing of the season against an Auburn side already three games in, and the difference showed in decision making rather than effort. Coach Martin Russell put it plainly in his match report:
No fault could be placed on the team's physical commitment throughout the game; but, being our first outing, compared to Auburn's third game of the season, we were ring rusty and frequently made poor decisions and unforced errors.
There were positives to take. James Fisher carried his form from last season straight into this one and was named player of the match. Joe Pankhurst and Lorenzo Tamayo both made their Gators debuts, and both got on the scoreboard.

What Comes Next
Florida travels to Miami on Saturday, October 3 for a double-header of B and C development games against FAU and Miami. For a number of the rookies it will be their first ever game of rugby, and the staff will get a first proper look at the depth coming through.
As Coach Russell put it: that is hugely exciting, and it will give us good insight into their potential and the health of our player pipeline. See you there.
