Saturday, October 24 at UVS Field. The women host Florida State at 11 AM, then the men's A XV takes on South Florida at 2 PM.
There is no such thing as a small weekend for Gators Rugby. Today is a big one. So was last Saturday, and so will next Saturday be. That is not a slogan. It is how a program that wants to compete for championships has to treat every match on the calendar.
Big days are not only the finals and the rivalry games. They are the ordinary Saturdays in October when a team decides who it is going to be. The habits built today are the ones that show up in November, in the spring, and at the end of a season when the margins get thin. A club that treats every match as one that counts gives itself the best chance to be ready when the biggest ones arrive.
Women: Hold the Line, Keep Climbing
The Gators women sit 14th in the latest National Collegiate Rugby Division I-AA Women's Coaches Poll. Florida State, today's opponent, sits 17th. The two sides met earlier this season in Gainesville, where Florida won 34-24.
That makes today simple. A win keeps Florida ahead of its in-state rival and keeps the women climbing the rankings. A loss hands Florida State the chance to close the gap. In a poll where a handful of results can move a team several places, every match carries weight.
The goal beyond today is the top 10, and there is only one way into it: one match at a time. Rankings are a reflection of what a team has done on the field, and the only way to change the reflection is to keep winning the matches in front of you.
This is a program with a habit of rising to the moment. The women are back-to-back Florida State Champions, won the 2026 CRC Division I-AA Shield, and earned the club's first berth at CRC National 7s. After a narrow 24-26 loss to UCF last weekend, today is the chance to answer the way good teams do: by getting back to work.
Men: A Starting XV Ready for South Florida
The men's A XV comes in off a 44-18 win over North Florida, their best performance of the fall. Peter Sciortino and captain Matt Boylan each scored twice in that match behind a dominant forward pack, Joe Pankhurst controlled the game at fly-half, and Danny Mata kept the scoreboard moving from the tee.
South Florida is a step up. Today's CRAA match is a real measure of where this squad stands, and the starting XV is up for the challenge. Boylan leads from No. 8, Pankhurst runs the backline from fly-half, and Mata is at fullback.
The bench matters too. The impact players are Alberto Araya, Mateo Cardona, Hernan Mora, Tim Peoples, Alejandro Paez-Sansonetti, Gabe Simosa, Diego Rodriguez and Fri Amoah-Mensah. Mora and Peoples earned their place after performing at A team standard for the B side last weekend. The coach's secret weapon: Dan Shumway.
Rugby is a game of 23, not 15. The players who come on in the second half often decide the matches that matter most, and a squad with real depth is one that can keep building all season.
Why Every Day Is a Big Day
Pulling on a Gators jersey is a privilege. Every match is an honor and an opportunity: to play the game this club loves, to be there for the teammate beside you, and to add a chapter to a story that started in 1969.
That is why today's result matters, and why it is not the only thing that matters. The Gators Rugby strategic pillars are the long view behind every matchday:
- One Community. Every Era of Gators Rugby. The players on the field today are connected to every Gator who has played since 1969, and to the alumni cheering them on from the sideline and from across the country.
- Build a Financial Foundation That Outlasts Us. Coaching, travel and scholarships are being built to last beyond any one season or any one graduating class.
- Compete for Championships. Build Champions. Rankings and results matter. So do the people this game builds along the way.
- Make Gators Rugby Impossible to Ignore. Every win, every ranking and every story told puts this program where it belongs.
Today's matches are the near view. The pillars are the far one. Each gives the other its point.
Every Era, One Club
The players on the field today are part of something bigger than one afternoon. The men's and women's programs share one club, one community and one alumni association. Generations of Gators have worn the same colors on the same kind of Saturday, and many of them are still following along.
That connection runs both ways. Alumni support pays for coaching, travel and scholarships. Current players carry the standard the alumni set. Moments like the first Fall Family Weekend in September, and Alumni Weekend every January, bring the eras together in person. Every match in between is a chance for this generation to give the next one something to live up to.
